Junebug

Today, I spent the whole entire day in my bathing suit.
Just like I used to do when I was a little kid.
And:
It. Was. Awesome.

When we were little kids, summer used to be all about lemonade and running through sprinklers and popsicles and lightening bugs.
No one was worried about how flat their abs are or what brand of sunglasses to wear or what those idiots on "The Jersey Shore" are up to.

Where did summer go?

I pondered this today as I went about my business.
I made me sad for a moment.
Because I guess the abscense of that childhood magic means that we're growing up.
People are getting married. And getting job offers that require them to move across the country. And having kids. Legitimately.
Yup. That means we're pretty much adults now.

But does that have to mean that the beauty of life is gone?
That the beauty of summer is gone.

Maybe.
But maybe not.

Summer is now about sunbathing instead of running through a sprinkler, because the more I think about it, the more I realize that I never really liked running through a sprinkler because I hate getting my bare feet muddy and covered in grass.

It's about cute dresses to wear while having mimosas at a cute restaurant for brunch with a cute boy on a sunny day.

Summer is about cruising around in your Jeep Wrangler with the windows down (because you have no air conditioning) and listening to the White Stripes because something about "Seven Nation Army" screams warm weather to me.

It's about spending time with your grandparents on their sun porch, drinking iced tea and eating strawberry-rhubarb pie.

Even with all these new joys, there are still popsicles and lightening bugs.

There's also still lemonade in my summer.
Now it just has a little more vodka in it.

I'll take that in exchange for growing up.
